There are several ways to treat prostate cancer. Radiation therapy, surgery or active surveillance are often viable treatment options. However, not everyone diagnosed with prostate cancer needs to start treatments immediately after receiving a diagnosis. When the time is right for treatment, it's important to review your options with a prostate cancer specialist.
Radiation therapy is used to treat almost every type of cancer and even several non-cancerous conditions. Treatment can be delivered
Several different radiation therapy technologies are available. The one that’s best for you is selected based on the type of cancer, its location, the stage, and your overall health.
Our radiation oncologist works closely with Clearwater area urologists, medical oncologists, surgeons, and other providers to develop a radiation therapy treatment plan that coordinates with surgery and other treatments that may be needed.
The treatment planning process includes taking 3-D images of the area where the tumor is located so that the treatment can be focused on that exact area of the body.
Based on the images, we will determine the correct body position for the most effective treatment. We help you get into the position before each treatment session.
We may place reference marks on or near the targeted tissue. This ensures the radiation is focused on the right area of the body during every session.
Once your treatments begin, each session is about 15 minutes or so. You’ll typically receive treatments 5 days a week for several weeks.
